The church was already existing even before 1200 as a royal chapel. It was given the name Nikolaikirche after St. Nikolaus von Bari in 1290. The roof gallery was later on added for the city councilors to have a special seat. You can also find two important gravestones inside, that of Siegfried zum Paradies and Katharina Netheha zum Wedel.
