Contrary to its name, it wasn't used as a chapel or for religious purposes. Based on its design, it earned its nickname "The Chapel" but it actually served as a living quarter for single officers. During penitentiary times, it was used as a meeting room and a schoolhouse then later remodeled to house bachelor guards.
